How can I be poor in spirit when I think that I am rich?
How can I – mourn my sin – when in my sin I sit?
Sitting proud in my accomplishments
someone else you see –
will bring justice for my neighbor
and to the suffering show mercy.
Seeing God through a heart that’s pure?
Or as God’s children, making peace?
Sure – as long as no trouble it brings –
I don’t want my persecution increased!
To be God’s salt, I will oblige –
and I’ll also be His light –
as long as it doesn’t interfere
with the football game tonight
And the new season just dropped! My favorite show?
It’s called: “The Head of State”
So your concerns about my anger and lust
will simply have to wait.
I understand, God, that you forbid revenge
and you want my good deeds to shine.
That if I lend to my neighbor without any guff
rewards in heaven will be mine?
But turn my cheek to evil?
I don’t think I can!
It’s normal, yes, to love my friend –
but pray for that awful man?
I can’t do it – Lord – it is way too much!
I don’t want to throw a fit!
But you expect me to be perfect – like YOU?
No way. No How. Forget it!!
I need my praise!
I need my worry!
I need my earthly treasure!
I need to judge those crazy folks –
they are foolish beyond all measure!
You say that what I see –
is like a log – jammed up in my eye?
Really? God. Who is judgmental now?
I don’t get it! Why? Why? Why?
Then Jesus came and spoke to me
“Child, silence, no more squawking.”
Step away from the world – now come to me –
toward My Kingdom we must start walking
Here is where you now belong.
This is your home, your people, your place.
I’ve taught you – we live much differently here –
we always lead with grace.
You tell me, “It’s impossible”
to let go of the world out there?
It’s true; not on your own; you can’t –
But child don’t despair.
I have the power to help you out.
I have all the gifts you need.
Just ask – they’re yours. Free of charge.
Just ask and bend your knee.
It’s your choice, of course, you don’t have to pray
I won’t force your knee to bend
But I hope you’ll pause to talk with me.
There’s no limit to the time we can spend!
Then – you will become who you were meant to be –
and the wonders of my Kingdom share!
My child it is simple, not impossible.
But it all begins with prayer.
